V 1,29 Taberna, - Threshold
Mats Holmlund Page updated: 2016-01-31
DESCRIPTION
The gateway to taberna V 1,29 features a lavastone threshold of the ordinary shop type. The threshold is 3.34 m long, between 0.34 and 0.53 m wide, and consists of three separate lava stones. The southernmost stone is 1.40 m long, and between 0.50 and 0.52 m wide. The middle stone is 0.94 m long, and between 0.48 and 0.53 m wide. The north stone is 1.00 m long and between 0.34 and 0.50 m wide.

There is a groove located circa 0.16 m from the west side of the threshold. It is between 0.04 and 0.06 m wide, and 0.02 m deep. The purpose of the groove was to fix the folding door or shutters that were used in Roman shops.

There is a pivoting hole in the south lava stone. It is located 0.04 m from the south end and 0.16 m from the west side. It is circa 0.08 m wide, 0.10 m high, and 0.01 m deep. The hole was most likely used for a smaller door that enabled passage in and out of the taberna when the folding door or shutters were set.

Unlike the thresholds of taberna V 1,30 and V 1,31, there is no visible hole for the locking mechanism of the smaller door.
