V 1,27 Taberna, - S wall
A. Karivieri & R. Forsell Page updated: 2009-04-17
DESCRIPTION
The south wall is located between 27 and V 1,28 g. It has an east-west orientation.

Description: The wall is built in opus incertum and consists of lava, cruma, limestone and tiles. The lower part of the wall is built of irregular lava stones. In the southwest corner, the pat of the wall that was built with lava stones reaches up to the height of 1.60 m. Above this level, the wall is mainly built of limestone, mixed with cruma and lava.
At the distance of ca 0.65 m from the southwest corner, there is a vertical opening in the wall, built for a circular terracotta pipe. The terracotta pipe is preserved in the lowermost part of the opening. The opening in the wall was built with pieces of tiles and limestone. The outer surface of the opening has been reinforced with mortar and pieces of terracotta. The wall above the opening has been rebuilt in modern times thus closing the pipe.

Wall-plaster: there are minor patches of wall-plaster and plaster coating in the southeast corner, ca 1.0 m above the basin below and also in the southwest corner. In addition, there are remains of white coating on the lava stones in the southwest corner, a possible coating of lime.

State of preservation: The upper part of the wall is missing and the uppermost part of the standing structure is reconstructed. An iron bar at the height of 5 m supports the wall.
