DESCRIPTION
This wall is the rear wall of the complex V 1,14-16, extending from room i through the peristyle to the viridarium. The wall is preserved to a significant height and seems to be in fairly good condition, though the central part above the terracotta pipe is modern.
The east wall of room h, peristyle-viridarium, is constructed in opus incertum with small to medium sized stones of limestone and numerous lava and cruma. Towards the southern part of the wall, a vertical terracotta pipe is partly exposed, the upper part of it being blackened.
A shallow, arched niche is placed near the NE corner. The lower line of the niche has the same height as the top of the bench attached to the N wall.
Two layers of plaster were identified on the wall, both of which belonged to type I. The plaster is painted in red.
The wall can be divided into nine structural or architectural units.
I: Window to peristyle in Casa degli Epigrammi greci (V 1,18, room l)
II: The wall in room i, with a line leaning slightly to the south, with an orthostat in floor level.
III: Area from the line in area II, to a terracotta pipe (V).
IV: Området mellan röret och nischen (VIII)
V: The terracotta pipe in the wall, partly with the covering preserved.
VI: Wall above the niche and viridarium
VII: Niche in the viridarium
VIII: Modern reconstruction
