Bench

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The remains of a bench are found along the S wall. The upper surface of tiles is visible only in the E part of the structure.

The bench does not bond to the walls. It is constructed in opus incertum, with a few tiles and reused plaster fragments in the core. The lower stone facing of the bench is made of larger standing lava stones. No plaster remains were found on the bench and no floor paving was found under it.

H: 0.95m above present floor level (2005).

The south wall of room d was badly damaged in the 1943 aerial bombings, presumably by the same bomb that destroyed the northern oven in V 1,15. The western part of the bench was therefore pushed northwards, into the room.
