Description

Thomas Staub

E wall: width 5.95 m, max. preserved height 3.90 m (southern part). Width of the door towards peristyle b: 2.72 m, of the northern section of the wall: 2.00 m, of the southern section: 1.25 m. On the northern section, the northernmost part (max. width 0.50 m, max. height 1.70 m) is covered by plaster with marks after the trowel. Above this, 0.40 m to the south of the corner, a line is visible in the wall, dividing it into a northern and a southern part. To the north, the wall consists of opus incertum of cruma, Sarno stone, lava and spolias of plaster, set into a yellowish mortar. The following section is also made up of incertum, using more or less the same stones, but set into a greyish-yellowish mortar, that contains lava-split, partly covered by modern concrete. To the south, a new vertical line is visible between this section and two standing tuff blocks (each 0.30 x 0.60 m, depth 0.35 m) placed upon each other, the lower one covered with mortar for ca. 0.05 m high. The following 0.40 m wide part of the wall is missing, only the remains at floor level are preserved. There, some pieces of Sarno stone, lava, brick and a spolia of a terracotta pipe are visible.
The southern part of the east wall is largely covered by modern concrete. It consists of a mixed opus incertum of Sarno stone, cruma, lava, yellow tuff and spolias of reddish mortar (max. 0.15 x 0.10 m), set into a greyish yellow mortar containing lava-split. The doorframe is constructed of the same material. Above 2.50 - 2.80 m height, the wall is reconstructed in modern times.
