Room a

Description

Henrik Boman & Monica Nilsson

Room a is reached from the street through two doorways. The wide lava threshold V 1,20 has cuttings for sliding shutters and the small lava threshold for V 1,21 was closed with a two-parted door on pivots that opened inwards. A brick tier marks the boundary between the two door openings.

Facing entrance V 1,21, and attached to the S wall, is the base of a staircase built of small stones in a hollow pi-shape. A rectangular boulder rests on the eastern arm of the structure and constitutes the first step of the staircase.

In the centre of the room is a roughly square lava stone with a T-shaped depression that points towards entrance V 1,20. It possibly functioned, in combination with a wooden support, as the lock of the door, but it is doubtful if the stone is in situ.

The eastern side of the room has three openings: one door and one window into room b and one doorway into corridor c.

From the SE corner, and just north of the staircase, runs a covered conduit towards the street.
