West Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

W wall: width 5.75 m, max. preserved height 4.40 m. This wall is, once more, composed of a mixed opus incertum, containing Sarno stone, lava, cruma, tuff, pieces of bricks and spolias of pavements, plaster and reddish mortar, all set into a yellowish mortar. In app. 2.60 - 2.70 m height, one row of pieces of bricks and tiles is visible in the southern and middle parts of the wall, but here probably not as a modern line, since the wall above is made of the same materials set into the same mortar as underneath. Only in the south-west corner, some traces of plaster are preserved; some areas are covered by modern concrete.
