North Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

North wall: width: 3.30 m, max. preserved height: 5.10 m, the uppermost part probably as a modern reconstruction. The wall is covered with plaster with remains of the decoration up to a height of 2.50 m (at springing level of a stuccoed arch in both corners of the wall) - 3.40 m (crown of the arch), above this faint remains of under plaster. Above the arch, five beam holes are arranged in a semi-circular form (0.10 x 0.05 m - 0.20 x 0.15 m), a parallel row of four holes is visible approx. 0.20 m above. These holes might only be results of fallen-out stones. As far as discernible, the wall seems to consist of opus incertum of lava and in its upper parts of cruma, but the covering with plaster, dirt and moss hampers a better observation.
