Room 1 (fauces)

Description

The long and narrow fauces is entered from via di Nola.
The S side of the entrance is built in op. quadratum in big tufa blocks, the same as the façade of V1, 4-8, with a suggested date about the middle of the 2nd century BC (Staub). However, the western side is built in op. testacium. This indicates a rebuilding of the façade from the western side of the entrance at a later date, possibly as late as after the AD 62 earthquake.
Along the E wall there are some remains of a cocciopesto floor, which is otherwise almost totally gone. A stone functioning as a prop-socket in the floor shows that a bar, which was placed at an angle towards the door, could block the door.

There are some patches of badly preserved wall plaster left on both walls.
