Door (closed)

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

E wall, closed door:

There is a door opening that has been closed in antiquity, located in the southern part of the wall, 25 cm from the south corner. The north edge of the door has been built with rectangular limestone blocks. The filling of the door opening has been made in opus incertum, consisting of limestone, lava, cruma and tuff. The opening is emphasized by a 2 cm wide depression. The upper edge is not visible, as it has been hidden behind modern mortar but the doorpost can be discerned up to the height of 2 m.

The lowermost row of stones above the threshold in the refilled door opening consists of lava stones, such as in the entrance between V1, 23b and V1, 24b. The level of the threshold corresponds to the level of the latest lavapesta floor.

Under the door there is a limestone threshold, 1.13 m long. The lower part of it is 11 cm high, the upper 2 cm. The step is 7-8.5 cm deep. There are two holes in the threshold both 4 cm in diameter. They are placed 18 cm apart, one 42 cm from the northern edge and the second 44 cm from the southern edge.

The closed door is 1.11 m wide.
