East Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

Parts of the wall (at S-E corner from floor-level till N-E corner, from 1.90 m h up until 2.60 m h) are covered with plaster, the area above with modern concrete. A 0.60 m wide and 1.45 m high area at the N-E corner is repaired in modern times, maybe a filling of a robbery digging. Beside this area, the original construction is visible. It consists of opus incertum made up mainly of tuff stones (fist sized to 0.25 x 0.20 m in size), set into a very pale, nearly white, mortar with quite large pieces of lava-split (up to 0.005 m large). This wall abuts against the S and N walls, where even remains of plaster continue behind the E wall.

w: 3.20 m, max. preserved h: 3.50 m (the uppermost 0.50 m is a modern reconstruction).
