Room l - cantina

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

A L-formed cellar is situated below room s. It was entered from the north. The inner, southern part of it was sealed off and probably filled intentionally in a secondary arrangement.

The cellar still remains unexcavated.

The rooms above the cellar, on the east side of the peristyle, were entered from the north. In this part of the house the effects of the earthquake of AD 62 can most clearly be seen. The southern part of the window wall of room s, and also the whole partition wall between s and exedra r, have sunken into the underlying cellar to a level of 0.3-0.4 m below the former position. Probably after the earthquake, half of the cellar was walled off to prevent further undermining of the foundation.
