Cistern

Description

Henrik Boman & Monica Nilsson

The superstructure of the cistern in the NE corner stands 0.40 m high and is well preserved, with a reddish plaster covering both the exterior and the interior. It fits into the angular corner, but has otherwise a rounded exterior shape while the shaft itself is circular. The room must at one point have been at a much lower level since the superstructure has been markedly raised. The upper (later) part has an inner diameter of 0.47 while the lower part has a diameter of 0.43. Down to the depth of ca 2 m that could be cleared from lapilli, are five cuttings that appear to comprise both inlets and footrests for climbing. At floor level is an outlet for excess water that is conducted into a covered drain.
