Cistern

Description

Mats Holmlund

Like in room 1 of taberna V 1,31, there is a vault shaped cistern below the floor in room 1, but unlike the cistern in V 1,31, the opening of this cistern is not visible. It is difficult to estimate the size of the cistern, but it is approximately 1.50 m long and 1.50 m wide. The depth of the cistern is unknown, but presumably it is at least 2.50 to 3.00 m deep.

The opening of the cistern is made of limestone, its diameter is circa 0.50 m, and it is located approximately 1.60 m from the southwest corner along the south wall. Originally the opening was coated with hydraulic plaster like the inside of the cistern, but no plaster remains today. The cistern is fed by a hole in the wall, which in turn is connected to the second water conduit of room 1 in taberna V 1,31.

The inside of the cistern is coated with pinkish, hydraulic plaster. The plaster is for the most part intact, but along its south wall, it is brittle and starting to come loose.
