East Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

Width: 4.45 m, max preserved height: 2.85 m. The lower part of the wall is hidden behind a row of three masoned cauldrons (height 1.15 m).  The wall itself seems to consist of four parts: the northernmost (width 1.15 m) is made of a mixed opus incertum, containing sarno stone, lava, cruma and pieces of brick, much covered by modern concrete. This area is followed by a row of three standing (as visible) blocks of sarno stone (0.4 – 0.45 x 0.55 – 0.75 m). After this row follows a smaller area, sloping downwards from the top of the wall to the height of the cauldrons in a width between 0.5 – 1.2 m, of opus incertum of mainly lava and sarno stone (but as it seems not in reddish mortar). The last part, visible above the cauldrons, seems to be a masoned area of mixed material (lava, sarno stone, cruma, pieces of bricks and tufa), which could be a modern repair.
