East Wall

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

The east wall of taberna 22 is located between taberna 22 and V,23b and it has a N-S orientation.

The wall is built in opus incertum. It consists mostly of limestone, quite a few lava stones, especially in the northeastern corner, tuff, cruma, terracotta and finally, there are tiles in the southern corner. In the southern corner, adjacent to the tile structure, yellow mortar has been used from 0.60 m and upwards (compare 24b, S wall). Most stones are rounded, measuring ca 10-20 cm. There are also some larger rectangular limestone blocks, some measuring 30x40 cm, others ca 15x25-30cm.

Wall-plaster:
On the northern part of the wall there are remains of wall plaster and a piece of wall painting. The plaster is visible from the north corner, continuing south 1.30 m stretching from floor level up to the height of 0.2 m. The plaster seems to continue beneath the lavapesta floor. The painted plaster is preserved 0.08-0.10 m above floor level in a band 0.01-0.07 m high and 1.0 m long. It is yellow, except for a small red patch, visible 0.40-0.45 m from the north corner.

State of preservation:
The upper part of the wall is missing and the uppermost part is reconstructed.
