East Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built in op. incertumconsisting of limestone especially in the lower part, lava, cruma, some tufa and spolia. By the opening towards the atrium the wall is built in op. testaceum. The upper part of the wall is reconstructed. In the middle of the wall there seems to have been a 1.10m wide opening that has been filled in in antiquity. There are large limestone blocks N of it and to the S there is a vertical crack in the wall where there are remains of plaster going into the wall. In the closed up part of the wall there is a mix of material with much lava, cruma, some tufa and spolia. As there is no sign of the opening in the bottom 0.40m of the wall it is credible that in an earlier period the wall had a window towards room d
At the time of documentation the wall was in bad shape and many stones have fallen out especially in the closed window. Some of the holes were filled with mortar during the 2010/11 restorations when a layer of mortar was applied to a large part of the wall. The holes closer to the floor still remain.
