North Wall

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The north wall of room e is so badly destroyed that its highest preserved point is c. 0.30m above floor level. Its structure is flimsy with small stones set in lavishly applied mortar in incertum technique. The wall is flanked to the west with the tile pier shared with the E wall of room d. At the eastern side, only the foundation stones remain. Here was a door opening to room g, but neither threshold nor doorframes are preserved.

The plaster (both fine and under) is identified as type C.

This part of the building was severely affected by the bombings during World War II, hence the current state of the north wall.

Restoration
The wall was restored in 2008 with a door opening at the centre of the wall. The location of the door is not archaeologically attested, but it would rather seem that the door was placed close to the eastern wall of the room.
