Latrine

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

6 (- 7) cm high seat (depression visible in the NE corner, against the E wall). 28 cm deep seat diagonally from channel on S side. The sink well was 1.80 m wide along N wall, 1.20 m wide N-S, and at least 1.40 m deep. The depression under the seat was covered with stucco reinforced with pieces of tiles. The inner face of the channel is covered with incrustation up to the level of 3.16 m, where even the remains of wall stucco against the N wall stop. This level is also marked with a horizontal narrow groove in the E wall, plausibly marking the level of the second floor.

The channel of the latrine continued up to the roof, probably to lead the rainwater and it was open also on the second floor, where there was possibly only an opening to empty the chaimberpot. The small quadrangular hole in the E wall, just S of the channel probably marks the spot where a wooden screen/wall separated the toilet from the taberna.

23 cm wide channel; 25 cm deep channel.

77 cm high seat in the corner (from the filling 9n 2006), 60 cm high from the foundation remains in the N wall to seat level.
