South Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

Anteroom 17:
S wall: width 1.60 m, max. preserved height 4.30 m. Width of the door towards atrium 4: 0.67 m, height 1.70 m. The wall is in parts covered by plaster and consists, where visible, until a height of 2.40 m, of lava-incertum with reddish mortar. Above this incertum, modern concrete covers the wall. At 2.85 m height, a row of three Sarno stone blocks (max. 0.30 x 0.25 m) is placed. Above a horizontal line over these blocks, the wall seems to be a modern reconstruction. A 0.08 - 0.10 m high stone block, constituting the lowest step of the stairway to the upper floor, covers the eastern part of the floor.
S wall: width 2.20 m, max. preserved height 3.80 m. The wall shows few remains of the plaster. Up to 1.50 m height, it is covered by modern concrete, in the western part; the lava-incertum with Sarno stone is recognizable, in the eastern part mainly smaller Sarno stone blocks (max. 0.20 x 0.10 m). Above 1.20 m height, the western part of the wall is built with lava-incertum in the reddish mortar, up to a height of 2.10 m, there above incertum of Sarno stone pieces. At 2.90 m height, the block in the corner towards the anteroom shows remains of plaster stretching into the wall. On the other side of this wall, seen from V 1, 5, a niche is visible at this location, maybe constituting remains of a later blocked door between two rooms of the upper floor. In 2.90 m height, 0.35 m to the east of the south-west corner, a 0.20 x 0.30 m large hole is visible in the wall. Above 3.30 m height, the wall is reconstructed in modern times.
