North Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

N wall: w: 3.20 m, max. preserved h: 3.10 m, for the door towards room 19, see description, room 19, S wall. The wall is covered by plaster up to max. 1.40 m h, against which one row of tegolae mammatae is set. At the bottom, some remains of the plaster on the tiles are preserved. Above 2.10 m h, this side of the wall seems to be a modern repair made of larger stones (max. 0.25 x 0.20 m). Modern concrete covers the central part of the wall. The area next to the door to room 19 is washed out and damaged; the stones above the arched top of the door are covered with modern concrete. Where visible, the wall consists of a mixed opus incertum of mainly Sarno stone and lava, cruma and spolias of brick, tiles, reddish mortar and cocciopesto, set into a yellowish mortar. This wall abuts against the W wall.
