Water conduits (constructed)

Description

The terracotta water channel connects the impluvium with the sidewalk and directs the overflow water to the street. An opening at the sidewalk is located in front of the entrance between lavablocks , where also a hole in the block is reserved for attachment.

Details

Dimensions of the four openings of the water channel in the fauces (see separate sketch):

1. Collapsed 21 x 12 cm, depth to filling 10 cm, width of channel 11 cm.
2. Original hole, diam. 9 cm, depth to filling 17 cm.
3. Collapsed, 15 x 10 cm, depth to filling 5 cm.
4, Original hole, largest, diam. 18 cm, depth to filling 30 cm. The channel below the hole has vertical sidewalls, width c. 10 cm, and it opens towards west, but towards east the roof of the channel is located lower down, 26 cm below the surface of the lavapesta floor by the hole and the channel turns slightly towards northeast, towards the impluvium.

The round holes in the lavapesta floor of the fauces were covered with lids to enable cleaning of the water channel.
