North Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

N wall: width 7.35 m, max. preserved height 4.80 m. For the materials used in this wall and for the door towards room g, see description, room g, south wall. Between 2.10 m and 3.50 - 4.20 m from the north-west corner, the wall is covered by plaster above 2.30 m up until max. 4.00 m height. In 2.50 m height, a horizontal joint is separating the lower coarse plaster from the upper smoothed fine plaster. In 3.90 m height, remains of a simple stuccoed cornice are preserved. In 4.20 m height, finally, a row of six beam holes (diam. 0.15 m) can be observed, three of them still filled up with lapilli. Since the wall continues above these holes, it seems plausible that these beams supported the floor of an upper storey, even though they are placed at an unusual height.
