Floor

Description

Thomas Staub

The floor in this room consists of a white lime-cement with inserted pieces of both white travertine and coloured (blue, red, yellow, grey, green, black) limestone. The floor continues underneath the north wall into cubiculum7. The floor reaches under the plaster on the east wall. Between the south wall and the floor, a approx. 0.01 m wide gap can be observed. Along the east wall, a fissure is visible in the floor surface and the floor seems to reach further underneath that wall. The same is visible at the southern part of the east wall in cubiculum7, probably remains of a later blocked niche.

Floor of the anteroom:
Even here, the pavement is made of lime-cement, with inserted white and coloured pieces of limestone. In its northern part, the floor differs from the one in room 6. Here the lime-cement contains black lava-split, which does not in room 6. There is no clear joint visible between the two sorts of floor, probably because the later one partly spreads over the other. This pavement abuts against the threshold in the opening towards atrium4.
