West Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

W wall: width 2.25 m, max. preserved height 2.40 m. Nearly the entire wall is covered by plaster with remains of dark and red colour. Only at north-west upper corner, a small area of a mixed opus incertum is visible, covered by modern concrete. The uppermost row of stones is a modern repair. At the western doorframe towards caldarium 20, a 0.04 m wide vertical line, partly filled in with modern concrete, runs from top of the frame to the floor, where a round hole (diam. 0.07 m, depth 0.10 m) is made into the floor. On both sides of the line, the plaster is slightly protruding, indicating that even the rim was originally filled with something protruding, maybe a wooden frame.
