Room f

Description

Henrik Boman & Monica Nilsson

Room f is the smallest room of the building, measuring 1.9 x 1.2 m. At the same time it is the room with the highest standing wall, up to ca 4 m, with a doorway into room d to the west preserved to a height of 2.6 m.

All four walls are covered in thick reddish hydraulic plaster and the floor is made of a well preserved layer of cocciopesto. There are remains of a low wall that had been built along all four walls. It was presumably a low bench along the walls that also functioned as a conduit to channel water under the threshold and into the covered drain that passes through the house and out into the street.

To the south is a window into room e.
From the above characteristics of room f, the conclusion is that the room functioned both as a light well to provided the rear area of the house with light, and, presumably more important, as a water collector for not only this small house but also from the area surrounding V 1,20-21. The water proof plaster and the arrangement of conduits around the walls, to the cistern and the over flow conduit out to the street proves this.
