North Wall

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The wall, as it appears today, is built in opus incertum, with a majority of limestone and only a few stones of cruma and lava. The mortar used is light to dark grey and very hard, typical of the modern mortar used in this area, and we can conclude that only the lower part of the wall, partly covered in red plaster, constitutes the remains of the ancient wall.

The same relation between preserved plaster in the lower level and the reconstructed wall above can be seen in the other side of the same wall, in the fauces (S wall) of the bakery.

At least two layers of plaster are identified; a third layer - identified as a first style plaster - is from a spoil.
