Floor

Description

Henrik Boman & Monica Nilsson

The floor is made of undecorated lavapesta and it is best preserved in the northern part of the room. A covered conduit runs from the door opening of corridor c to the south end of the large doorway and then under the sidewalk out onto the street.

The wide threshold V 1,20, to the north, is made of two large lava blocks with cuttings for sliding shutters, whereas the small lava threshold for V 1,21 was closed with a two-parted door on pivots that opened inwards. A brick tier marks the boundary between the two door openings.

Approximately at the centre of the S wall is the base of a staircase built of small stones in a pi-shape against the wall. A rectangular boulder rests on the eastern arm of the structure and constitutes the first step of the staircase.

In the centre of the room is a roughly square lava stone with a T-shaped depression that points towards entrance V 1,20. It possibly functioned, in combination with a wooden support, as the lock of the door, but it is doubtful if the stone is in situ.
