East Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built in op incertum and consists of lava stones, cruma, mainly in the upper part and some limestone. There is a doorway towards Casa del Torello, which has been blocked in modern times, probably 1947 or 48 (Staub). Above the door opening there is a modern wooden lintel and the area immediately surrounding the lintel up to the height of 2.70 has been restored with lava, cruma and a piece of tile. The doorjambs on both sides of the door opening is fragile and stones have fallen out.

There are remains of plaster and plaster coating on large part of the wall; on both sides of the door opening and above the door at the height of 2.80-3.30. N of the door opening three to four layers of plaster and plaster coating can be distinguished. Some of these continue behind the N wall. Likewise plaster on the S side of the door opening continues behind the S wall. Clearly the E wall is the oldest in the room.
