Floor

Description

A red cocciopesto floor is preserved against the S wall, connected to the black dado, therefore contemporary with the decoration of the S wall. Above the red cocciopesto, there is in the S part of the room c. 10 cm thick filling, consisting of pieces of travertine, wall-plaster in various colours, red cocciopesto with pieces of pottery, and some tesserae. The pieces of wall-plaster against S wall include several colours, red, yellow, white, black, green and a piece of striped painting with dots of colour above.

The red cocciopesto by the entrance towards the atrium is connected to the light grey lavapesta in the entrance, which seems to be connected with the floor in the atrium.

There seems to be two layers above one another against the E wall, the upper one with pieces of travertine and plaster. When the dado of the S wall is connected to the red cocciopesto, the dado in the SE corner of the E wall goes deeper. It seems that the E wall plaster was painted where the red cocciopesto is missing or destroyed and an upper filling against the S part of the E wall is covering the red cocciopesto layer that is connected to the wall plaster of the S wall.

Comments

The upper filling with pieces of travertine and wall-plaster in the south part of the room, especially against the east wall belongs probably to the modern reconstruction of central part of east wall, when the hole caused by funicolari was refilled.
