West Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built in op. incertum. It consists mainly of limestone with some cruma and lava stones. In the middle of the wall there is one piece of a tile and towards the S corner there are some pieces of travertine. There are some modern repairs made in the wall, esp. in the lower central part of the wall and in the lower S part. As there is a lot of modern mortar on the wall in the part where the travertine is located it is impossible to determine if these stones are the result of a modern repair or not. There is a hole in the wall above the upper remains of the S wall as if a stone or a tile has fallen out. Above it between the heights of 3.50-4.0m you can see where the S wall abutted to the west.
At the height of 3.5m there is a rectangular opening. This is most likely a door opening towards taberna 30. Just below it at the height of c 3.20m there is a slight indentation running horizontally. It corresponds to de indentation in the N wall and probably marks the location of the downstairs ceiling.
There are some remains of badly damaged plaster coating on the wall. One patch is located in the middle of the wall at the height of 1.92-2.75m. Another is located in the lower N part at the height of 0.35-0.97m.
