V 1,27 Taberna

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

The large taberna has a wide door opening towards Via del Vesuvio in the west. There is also a door opening towards the atrium 26b in the northern part of the east wall.

Three different phases of floors have been noticed, one in cocciopesto and two in lavapesta.

In the northeast corner of the floor was a cistern which had been connected to three drains, two of them running under the atrium floor and one emerging from below the floor of the fauces of 26. The cistern had been filled in antiquity and the latest floor level has covered it.

Along the east wall there was a foundation and attached to it, to the south, is a rectangular basin covered with water resistant plaster. West of the basin is another cistern connected to a terracotta drainpipe that is visible in the south wall. The pipe may have carried water from the roof to the cistern. Connected to the cistern was another terracotta pipe located in the floor running towards the entrance of the taberna, disappearing under the threshold.

The basin and the residue of alum found in it, leads us to assume that the taberna was used in connection with textile production or handling.
