West Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built in op. incertum except for the S part towards the atrium which is made in op. testaceum. The upper part of the wall is restored. The incertum contains mostly limestone some lava, cruma and some terracotta spolia. The testaceum part of the wall reached to the level of the door lintel of the entrance to the adjacent corridor b. There were two holes in the testaceum section at the height of 2.04m and 2.14m above the floor, probably made for scaffolding during he construction. Both holes were filled in at the restoration in 2010/11.

There are some remains of wall plaster all dark and weathered. In the N corner, one part reaches from the floor up to 1.50m. Another is placed higher up 1.90-2.75m. Both continue on the N wall. A third section of wall plaster was preserved along the edge of the testaceum part of the wall at the height of 0.80-2.04m. Edges of plaster now gone can also be detected further down on the testaceum wall. Some small remains of plaster can also be seen along the floor. Remains of plaster coating still exist on many of the stones in the wall.
