South Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

S wall: width 3.08 m, max. preserved height 3.90 m. This wall consists of an opus incertum, containing mainly lava, but also with pieces of cruma, tuff and Sarno stone, in the upper zone also reused pieces of cocciopesto pavement and tiles (dimensions of stones: 0.05 x 0.05 - 0.15 x 0.10 m), all set into a greyish-yellowish mortar. In ca. 3.00 m height, ca. 0.40 m from the south-west corner, a 0.15 m wide hole can be observed, which reaches through to room c of house V 1,3, probably due to a fallen-out stone. At both corners, some remains of plaster are visible, at the south-west, between 1.70 and 2.80 m height, 0.95 m wide, and at the south-east in 1.90 and 2.45 m height, 0.55 m wide. On both sides, traces of a now lost stuccoed frieze are visible.
