Threshold

Description

Thomas Staub

Threshold between room d and peristyle b
The threshold consists of one square block of lava, 1.3 x 0.41 m, on the southern side covered by the doorframe. It is split in two parts, the western being a narrow (0.08 m) fillet, the eastern one being the lower part (0.03 m lower, 0.33 m wide) over which the door was opened and closed. Partly damaged on the east side. This side is also partly covered by cocciopesto reaching over from room d. The fillet shows remains of a lavapesta cover reaching over from the floor of the northeaster part of the peristyle, indicating that this threshold was out of use in the last period of the life span of the house.
On both parts we can observe different cavities. On the fillet there are square holes near both doorframes: 1: 0.04 m from north frame, 0.025 from west edge, 0.07 x 0.035 x 0.03 m, 2: partly covered by south frame, 0.025 m from west edge, 0.07 x 0.035 x 0.03 m, partly covered by modern concrete. In the lower part one round cavity (diam. 0.065 m) can be observed at the rim, 0.04 m from north edge which preserves some remains of iron and which probably served as pivot hole. In the middle part two boltholes are placed, 1: 0.52 m from north edge, 0.025 from rim, 0.03 x 0.02 x 0.015, 2: 0.72 from north edge, 0.025 from rim, 0.03 x 0.02 x 0.015 m.

No threshold in the two doors to room e

Threshold between room d and the rear entrance V 1,9
The threshold consists of one block of lava, 1.8 x 0.46 m large. The upper side is 0.18 m above the level of the walkway. The door opened up into the room, the rim (0.035 m high) of the doorstop is 0.12 m from the west edge. On the higher part of the threshold one slightly trapezoid slot is abutting against each doorframe, both approx. 0.1 m from the east edge, the southern one is 0.05 x 0.18 x 0.04 m, the northern one 0.06 x 0.16 x 0.035 m large. In the lower part two boltholes are placed near the rim: 1: 0.775 m from south edge, 0.02 from the rim, 0.035 x 0.035 x 0.03, 2: 0.96 from the south edge, 0.03 m from the rim, 0.035 x 0.04 x 0.03 m. No remains of pivot holes are visible.
