West Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

W wall: width 3.03 m, max. preserved height 4.20 m. The southern part of the wall is covered with plaster up to a max. height of 1.80 m. This part, between the south-west corner and the southern frame of the door towards room k, is made of opus incertum of lava (0.05 x 0.05 m - 0.20 x 0.15 m), set into a greyish-yellow mortar. Above 3.30 m height, the wall is a modern reconstruction. The southern frame of the door to room k (depth 0.46 m, partly plastered) is constructed of small regularly cut blocks of Sarno stone and tuff, and some blocks of cruma and lava (0.18 x 0.09 m - 0.30 x 0.10 m). The lintel and the zone above are modern. The northern section of the wall, including the northern doorframe, is again built of small blocks (dimensions as above), here mostly of tuff with some blocks of Sarno stone and cruma. This section is up to 1.30 m height covered by plaster.
