Floor

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The floor of room f is not well preserved, but appears to be made up of a greyish clay layer.

From the SE corner to the threshold in the W wall is a conduit slightly below floor level. It was presumably fed by the terracotta pipe exposed in the SE corner of the room. The drain is covered by tiles, stones and a yellowish brown mortar. At its end, next to the threshold towards the atrium, the floor has a patch of white coating.

The threshold between room f and the atrium is a cut large lava block. It is T-shaped to accommodate a wooden doorframe, with the wider side towards the atrium and with a shallow cutting along the side that faces room f. Within the cutting, at both the south and north ends, are round depressions with traces of iron, implying the use of a double door with metal pivots. In the centre of the lower part of the lava block, facing room f, are two small rectangular cuttings, also connected with the door mechanism.
