East Wall

Description

Henrik Boman

The east wall is built in opus mixtum to the south, abutting the south wall, with, as on all other inner walls in the building, two bands of brick extending along the complete face of the wall: one at a height of c. 1.1 m, seven rows of brick thick (c. 0.20-0.30 m wide), and an upper c. 2.6 m in height, four rows thick (c. 0.17 m wide). The wall in below and between these brick bands constructed with opus incertum.

Two breaches made by tunnellers are found in this wall. A large part of the massive brick area is destroyed, c. 0.3 m above floor level, 1.23 m in height and 0.44 in width. On the corresponding side of the wall, in V 1,2, the breach is very small and the tunnellers did obviously not penetrate through the wall. On the northern end of the wall, another breach is cut through the wall. The holes are mended with yellow brick and lime stones.

In the opus mixtum part are the zig zag pattern Clearly defined, extending between 0.88 and 1.21 m from the S wall below the brick band: and above the brick band; between 1.06 — 1.29 m. The brick rows in the mixtum is not evenly constructed. The lower part has five and six brick rows in the extruding zig zag, the upper seven in both preserved. The brick band interrupts the rhythm in the longer zags, so only one complete is visible in the lower region (with six row), and one in the upper (also with six rows).
