North Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built in op. incertum. It consists mainly of limestone with an addition of some cruma, tufa, lava stones, a few pieces of travertine and one piece of cocciopesto. There is much modern mortar and modern support plaster in the W part of the wall where the cocciopesto piece is located, therefore it is hard to determine if it is part of the original construction or the result of a later renovation.
At the height of 3.10m and 3.15m seven beam holes are found. Two of the holes are round and smaller then the rest while the others are of a rectangular shape and larger. One of these is filled with lapilli, another is partly filled with lapilli. The beam holes are evidence of a second storey. Yet another hole is found higher up in the wall at the height of 4.1m. This hole is likely to be the result of a stone that has fallen out of the wall. There is a horizontal indentation running just below the row of beam holes, evidence of the location of the downstairs roof.
There is some badly damaged plaster with rough surface in the lower part of the wall. Modern support plaster shows that some of it has fallen from the wall in later times.
