South Wall

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The south wall of room e is made of lava incertum in the lower part, up to a height of c. 1.20m, and limestone incertum with a few lava and cruma stones in the upper part. The wall is flanked by a square tile pier at each end and it has a door entrance to room f next to the western pier.

The eastern tile pier protrudes from the wall and forms one half of a doorframe between room e and the peristyle. The tiles/bricks rest on a cut lava block.

The western tile pier (H: 1.8m; W: 0.4m) is aligned with the incertum wall and forms one half of the doorframe to room f. On top of it rests a wooden reconstructed lintel which supports some rather large, cut slabs of limestone. The opposite doorframe is dressed with small, neatly cut blocks of lava, cruma and limestone.

Plaster samples were collected from the lava part of the wall and they are all of type I.
